Action Planning Session: @ A E Harris (rehearsal / performance space) Keep, Develop, Replace?
- Convenor:
- James Yarker
- Attendees:
- Jonny O’Hanlon, Michele Begey(?), Jane Packman, Tyrone Huggins, Lottie Leedham, Hannah Cuosson (?), Therese Collins, Catherine Edwards (?), Gillian Twait, Emily Aymes (?), Olivia Winteringham, Suzan Spence, Ben Pacey.
- Description:
James set out the current situation with the Stan’s Cafe venue @ A E Harris, that is probably, but not certainly time limited due to terms of the lease. It is costing Stan’s Cafe both financially and in human resources which is just about sustainable for 2010 but not beyond. Stan’s Cafe finds the space valuable for itself and enjoys the use that is made of it by other practitioners.
A series of examples were given of other artist led spaces around the country which could serve as models for a sustainable version of @ A E Harris.
A number of these models include revenue generating dimensions, either in the hiring out of space long term or selling refreshments / club nights.
There was a consensus that the space should continue to serve as a venue but not become a venue, with all the baggage that brings. Flexibility is a key asset.
There was interest in the venue’s potential as a ‘pop up bar’ there were volunteers to help with décor or bar work.
The BME scheme Sustain was cited as a scheme which is looking to invest in various theatre spaces including a ‘dirty space’ such as @ A E Harris.
Tyrone said he was comfortable with the space being a Stan’s Cafe space which they share generously with the community ‘Stan’s Cafe is family’.
The Christmas Party to be hosted @ A E Harris on 11th December (from 7.30pm) could be the first of a series of ‘theatre socials’ which work both as points of connection and communication within the Theatre Community, but which also act as fundraisers (leave contact details on the door).

There is now officially the potential of this venue extending beyond it’s original December 2010 cut off date, but we do have to make it more financially viable.

That is good news. Any more plans for theatre socials yet?
And I’m still up for helping with up a bar/cafe.
I’ve been talking to people from the foodie world a bit, one friend has started running a “food club” that uses a different restaurant and thier kitchen for a night in order to cook some nice food and have a good time. Those type of initiatives sound are useful trends to look at.
It strikes me that if A.E Harris is to make some money the parties sometimes need extend out beyond us theatre makers and to attract people from all areas of the arts and those who support that type of enterprise.
By the way the Christmas party was great, so thanks very much for hosting that.
