Theatre in West Midlands & Climate Change
- Convenor:
- Alex Jones
- Attendees:
- Orit Azaz, Nusra Nazir
- Description:
Alex – climate change activist, member of Greenpeace, has written several plays about these issues which have had successful productions in US, Italy and UK. Feels people are not taking it seriously enough
Nusra – artist, care v much about climate change issues. “What is the point of discussing the future of anything without reference to climate change?”
Orit – Why is West Mids theatre community not engaged in eg Tipping Point, Cape Farewell, Transition Town Network? Is it because we so far from the sea that we think it won’t affect us or that we can’t make positive contribution?
Together:
• We don’t think you are taking this seriously enough
• What is the theatre community of W Mids going to do to engage with these issues?

Along with the exisiting movements noted above, there is an interesting link between this discussion and the Malmaison Local Grown one. In that group they noted: that “local” theatre is likely to be more enviromentaly friendly than taking you show touring internationally. Seems to make sense, and perhaps it will taste better too when sampled in situ…
I think it would also be helpful to think about reusing materials, borrowing equipment etc in order to reduce our wastage. A classic example seen at A.E Harris by Stan’s Cafe recently where a modified set from previous production was used in the latest - hats off! Not suitable for everything, but worth doing when it can work.
